2024 WINNER

LEO KAHL

My objective was to capture the colors, excitement and festive mood of Pimlico racecourse and the Preakness Stakes. I chose the loose and romantic medium of watercolor to depict this scene as it best depicts the movement and drama of the day.

ABOUT THE ART OF RACING

1/ST and the Maryland Jockey Club are thrilled to announce their ongoing collaboration with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) as sponsors of The Art of Racing—a nationwide call for entries showcasing original, two-dimensional visual art capturing the distinctive essence of Thoroughbred racing and the iconic Preakness Stakes. We are excited to invite artists from across the nation to take part in the competition’s third year.

The Preakness and MICA have a long and distinguished connection that began in the 1970s when Raoul Middleman, a professor at MICA at the time, guided his students in creating murals of Pimlico Race Course. The seven murals that Middleman and his students painted are permanently located on the second floor of the grandstand and offer a close-up view of character and history.
