The Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown returned to Laurel Park for the historic 151st running of the Preakness Stakes, featuring the finest Thoroughbreds in the world competing for North America’s most valuable trophy in sports, the Woodlawn Vase.
He was impressive last year winning the Champagne (G1) at Saratoga by 6 ½ lengths. His two starts this year have been fifth-place finishes in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and Wood Memorial (G2).

He still hasn’t won a race, but this colt who sold for $12,000 was third in the Kentucky Derby (G1) at odds of 70-1 and third in the Wood Memorial (G2) at 28-1. He’ll be running late.
A late-entry to the Preakness, this Virginia Derby winner finished a very respectable sixth in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Torres won the 2024 Preakness aboard Seize the Grey. This is the first Preakness starter for Riley Mott.
He won the Rushaway Stakes at Turfway March 21, and that was his last start. He finished seventh in February in the Fountain of Youth (G2) behind Kentucky Derby runners Commandment and Chief Wallabee. Joseph a perennial leading trainer in Florida and conditioner of White Abarrio and Skippylongstocking.
This son of Authentic has two wins and two seconds in four starts. He started the year by winning at Sunland Park by 13 lengths before finishing second in the Lexington (G3) at Keeneland.
This gray gelding was scratched before the Derby when he reared and fell behind the starting gate. How bad was it? “I’ve taken worse falls out of bed,” Ennis said. He won the Battaglia at Turfway Park in February but was beaten 22 ¼ lengths in the Blue Grass (G1) in April.
He finished 14th in the Kentucky Derby (G1), seventh in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and second in the San Felipe (G2). Trainer won the 2012 Preakness with I’ll Have Another.
He’s lived up to his auction price of $525,000. He’s unbeaten in three starts – all across Laurel – and won the Tesio April 18 by 8 ¼ lengths. This will be his toughest test, but he’s also the only starter to have raced over the track.

The connections thought about the Derby but decided to wait for the Preakness. The son of Good Magic was third in the Blue Grass (G1) and fifth in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3).
This son of Candy Ride has run all six of the races at Oaklawn, including the Bath House Row, an automatic qualifier for the Preakness. Trainer’s only other Preakness starter was a seventh-place finish in 1995. Crupper was bred by the owner.
This $320,000 daughter of Uncle Mo comes into the race off second-place finishes in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) and Davona Dale (G2) at Gulfstream. She really hasn’t thrown a bad race.
This is another daughter coming into the Black-Eyed Susan from the Weber City. This daughter of Gun Runner finished third in that race. She finished second last year in the Demoiselle (G2) at Aqueduct.
The runner-up behind Ivy Girl in the Weber City, she won her previous two starts at Fair Grounds. It took her six tries to win her first race, but her first four were on turf.
She’s only run three times, and the last two for Barboza. Those races have resulted in two wins, one at Gulfstream and the other at Tampa. She should be close to the pace.
She has two wins and two seconds in six starts across Laurel. She won the Beyond the Wire Stakes in March and was fourth in the Weber City Miss April 18. She will have to beat the three fillies that finished in front of her April 18.
Lightly raced filly didn’t hit the board as a 2-year-old in two starts but has returned to win her maiden race and then the one-mile Valley of the Vapors, both at Oaklawn. She was a $140,000 purchase.
After finishing second in her debut she’s reeled off four consecutive victories. All her races, however, have been against Louisiana breds, so this will be her first start against open company. Jockey won the Kentucky Derby (G1) aboard Golden Tempo.
This $100,000 filly closed from eighth to win the Weber City Miss on a fast track and won over a sloppy track at Parx to win the Main Line Stakes. This daughter of Maxfield comes in from New York.
She’s won two of her eight starts, the last an optional allowance claimer at Parx at a mile off a four-month layoff. A $5,000 purchase, this will be her first trip across Laurel.
She won the Cash Run at Gulfstream in February but comes into this race after a fifth-place finish in the Davona Dale (G2) and seventh-place finish in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2). The daughter of Constitution has two wins in nine starts.
