An impressive winner of his first two career starts, Bayern comes to Old Hilltop after placing in back-to-back graded stakes in Arkansas and Kentucky.

Unraced at 2, the son of 2005 Grade 1 Suburban Handicap winner Offlee Wild opened 2014 with successive victories at Santa Anita. He broke his maiden by 3 ½ lengths in his Jan. 4 debut, and followed with a front-running 15-length romp in a one-mile allowance on Feb. 13.

Bayern was put to the test in his subsequent start, setting a moderate pace as the favorite before fading to finish third as the favorite in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on April 12, beaten just over five lengths.

Just two weeks later, Bayern again led from start to finish to win the Grade 3 Derby Trial at Churchill Downs by a nose over Embellishing Bob, but was disqualified and placed second after the two foes repeatedly brushed down the stretch.
