The headline event of the 10-week meeting is the 138th running of the $1 million Preakness® Stakes (G1), the middle jewel of horse racing’s famed Triple Crown, on May 18.

Award Winning Racing Journalist And Historian Joe Kelly Passes

BALTIMORE, 11-27-12---The Maryland racing community lost one of its most prominent members when award-winning journalist and racing historian Joseph B. Kelly passed away Mondayat Stella MarisRehabilitation and Hospiceafter a short battle with cancer. He was 94 years old.

A lifelong resident of Baltimore, Joe Kelly covered horse racing for nearly 70 years.

Maryland Racing Commission Agrees Unanimously To Change Secretariat's 1973 Preakness Stakes To A Record 1:53 After Hearing

BALTIMORE, 06-19-12---The Maryland Racing Commission voted Tuesday afternoon in a special hearing at Laurel Park that 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who set records that still stand at the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, also set the record in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course 39 years ago.

In a unanimous 7-0 decision, the official time of the Preakness was changed from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53. Secretariat is one of 11 thoroughbreds to win the Triple Crown, with victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont as a 3-year-old.

BALTIMORE, 05-19-12 – I’ll Have Another moved one step closer to a Triple Crown sweep Saturday at Pimlico Race Course with a thrilling narrow victory over a tenacious Bodemeister in the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes.

Reddam Racing LLC’s 3-year-old colt, who defeated Bodemeister by 1 ½ lengths to win the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs two weeks earlier, was pushed to the limit to prevail by a neck over the Bob Baffert-trained pacesetter in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.

Hudson Steele Wins Jӓgermeister Dixie Stakes

 BALTIMORE, 05-19-12 – Roger J. Weiss’ Hudson Steele won for the fifth time in seven tries on the turf Saturday at Pimlico Race Course, registering his biggest score of them all in the $300,000 Jӓgermeister Dixie Stakes (G2).

Todd Pletcher trains the son of Johannesburg, who won the Henry Clark Stakes over this course on April 28. In the Dixie, he carried Javier Castellano to a 2 ½ -length victory in 1:47.29 for the nine-furlong distance over the firm turf.  Humble and Hungry finished second and Forte Dei Marmi was third.

Awesomemundo Wins Allaire Dupont Distaff

BALTIMORE, 05-19-12 – Natalie J. Baffert’s Awesomemundo fell far back early before rallying to win the $100,000 Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes (G3) Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

The Bob Baffert-trained filly completed the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:44.70, winning by just a head over Love and Pride after a contentious battle to the finish line.  Catch a Thief took third.

Skyring Captures James Murphy Stakes

BALTIMORE, 05-19-12 – Trainer D. Wayne Lukas saddled Skyring to win the $100,000 James W. Murphy Stakes, his second stakes victory in as many races on Saturday’s Preakness Day undercard at Pimlico Race Course.

Ridden by Joel Rosario, Skyring captured his first stakes triumph in his first start on the turf. The bay colt ran the one mile on the turf in 1:35.64, besting Easy Crossing at the finish by just a neck. Mr. Handsome finished third, a nose behind Easy Crossing.
