3yo Colt Super Saver Magdalena's Chase
The talented bay son of 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver remained undefeated in his brief career with a record-setting victory in the inaugural Pat Day Mile (G3), formerly the Derby Trial, which was renamed and moved to the Derby undercard this year. Competitive Edge ran the mile in 1:34.18, eclipsing the stakes record of 1:34.40 set by Ack Ack in 1969.
Competitive Edge won his only two starts as a juvenile by combined 16 lengths, romping by 10 ¼ in his July 26 unveiling before a similarly dominant performance in the seven-furlong Hopeful (G1), both at Saratoga Race Course.
Considered one of the leading Triple Crown contenders off those efforts, Competitive Edge was sidelined by a hairline fracture in his hind leg shortly after the Hopeful and did not return to the work tab until earlier this year.
In his first start off the layoff, Competitive Edge crushed a small but solid field that included previously undefeated 3-year-old Mr. Jordan by 8 ¼ lengths in the seven-furlong Tamarac Stakes March 27 at Gulfstream Park.
