Ring Weekend
Gelding Tapit Free the Magic
7-2-2-2 $305,660

His connections initially targeted the Kentucky Derby on May 3 until Ring Weekend spiked a fever a week before the race and was taken out of consideration. He has continued to train up to the Preakness from trainer Graham Motion’s base at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland.

A son of Laurel Futurity and Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner Tapit, Ring Weekend was winless in three starts at 2 and opened 2014 running second by a half-length in a 7 ½-furlong Gulfstream Park turf maiden race in January.

Brought back three weeks later, Ring Weekend was a professional half-length winner in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race on the dirt at Gulfstream. He burst on to the Triple Crown trail with an impressive front-running three-length score in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby on March 8 at odds of 14-1.

In his subsequent start, Ring Weekend was a distant but decisive second behind Our Caravan in the $258,720 Calder Derby on April 5 despite bobbling at the break and having to steady on the first turn and at the top of the stretch.
