Ride On Curlin
Colt Curlin Magical Ride
Though he has yet to win a stakes, Ride On Curlin is battle-tested, placing in four graded stakes including a pair of Grade 1 races. Most recently, he closed to be seventh from post 18 in the May 3 Kentucky Derby at odds of 17-1, beaten less than seven lengths.
A son of 2007 Preakness winner and two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, Ride On Curlin broke his maiden in his second start, setting an Ellis Park track record for 5 ½ furlongs (1:03) last July. From there, he was fourth in the Grade 2 Iroquois at Churchill Downs, third in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park and third as the favorite in the $60,000 Street Sense Stakes to end his juvenile campaign.
Ride On Curlin began 2014 by running third in both the Grade 3 Southwest and Grade 2 Rebel at Oaklawn Park, the latter beaten by just a length. In his subsequent start, Ride On Curlin dropped back after being bumped at the start but rallied to finish second in the Grade 1 $1 million Arkansas Derby, 4 ¾ lengths behind Danza, who would go on to run third in Louisville.
In the Kentucky Derby, Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel saved ground along the inside before steering Ride On Curlin nine wide to make a late run that wound up short and cost Borel the Preakness mount.
