Sumacha’hot Romps In Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap
BALTIMORE,MD 05-16-09– Butch Cave’s Sumacha’hot circled his rivals and stormed away to victory in the 2nd running of the $35,000 Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap Saturday at Pimlico.
Trained by his owner, the gelded son of Mojave Moon was away slowly in the 1 1/16-mile test on the main track, settling near the back of the pack as the field raced into the far turn. The 4-year-old gelding came off the rail coming into the stretch and rallied widest of all to power to a 7 ¼-length triumph. Although not able to withstand the stretch surge of the winner, Out To Please, a 17-1 long shot, held second, 2 ¼ lengths ahead of Norjac.
Sumacha’hot, who was ridden by jockey Grant Whitacre, paid $7 to win while capturing his third victory in six starts this year.
Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap Quotes
Butch Cave, winning owner/trainer, Sumacha’hot – “This race and the Claiming Crown in July were my two goals. For little guys like me, these starter allowances really keep up going. When I saw the fractions, especially the 47-and-change, I knew we were going to run big. I was already pretty comfortable coming into this race that we could beat most of the horses in this field.”
Grant Whitacre, winning jockey, Sumacha’hot – “I knew he was tons the best today. I’ve been getting up on him and working him, and he’s been getting better and better. He’s got a great late kick. Last time, the turf was soft and he just missed. I’m Maryland-born and –bred, so it’s special to win today.”
