Starfish Bay Survives Duel In The Very One Stakes
BALTIMORE,MD 05-14-10 – Gainesway Stable’s Starfish Bay set a pressured pace before holding off a determined late charge by Suzzona to capture the $70,000 The Very One Stakes, contested over the Pimlico turf course.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, who will saddle Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver for Saturday’s 135th Preakness Stakes at Old Hilltop, the 4-5 favorite completed five furlongs in 56.56 seconds under John Velazquez.
Starfish Bay broke for the lead, fended off speedy Canadian Ballet into the stretch but was quickly engaged by long shot Suzzona, who fell just a neck short of victory at the finish. Kosmo’s Buddy finished third.
Her game victory in the Very One Stakes is the third added-money triumph for the daughter of Elusive Quality. She won the From New York To Old York Stakes at Saratoga last year and the Lady’s Turf Sprint at Gulfstream this winter.
Starfish Bay paid $3.80 for her fifth career victory.
The Very One Stakes Quotes
Todd Pletcher (winning trainer, Starfish Bay) – “It was a good race for her. She didn’t break great but she recovered quickly. It took her three or four strides to get there. When she got there, she really dug in. She’s very fast.”
John Velazquez (winning jockey, Starfish Bay) – “We just wanted to break and go, but she didn’t break very well. I helped her out a little and when she got the lead, she was a fighter.
