No Brakes Rallies To Win Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap
BALTIMORE, 05-21-11---Katherine Sancuk’s No Brakes rallied from next to last to win the $25,000 Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap, the first of nine stakes on Preakness Day.
Xavier Perez rode the Parker’s Storm Cat offspring for owner-trainer Sancuk, who was also working as an outrider on the 13-race program. The 6-year-old gelding, who finished fifth in this race last year and who was claimed for $5,000 by his present connections in March, came four wide into the stretch to score a narrow victory over Money For Love, with Say Now finishing third.
No Brakes completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.88 and paid $7.60.
Deputed Testamony Starter Quotes
Katherine Sancuk (winning trainer, No Brakes) – “I claimed this horse specifically for this race. He runs hard every time. He gives you a heart attack because he was so far out of it. It scared me to death. Xavier rides the hair off him. This is so exciting. This is my first handicap.”
Xavier Perez (winning, jockey, No Brakes) – “I was concerned after watching the first race, because the speed was holding. My horse likes to lay off the pace so I had to do some thinking. We had been planning and training for this race all month long. I knew he would do well, because when I worked this horse in the morning, he likes to run for me. I just waited for him to grab the bit, and when he did I thought we would get there.”
