Maryland Jockey Club Reports Record Handle & Attendance on Black-Eyed Susan Day

Actress Wins Black-Eyed Susan (G2), Shaman Ghost Takes Xpressbet Pimlico Special (G3)

BALTIMORE – The Maryland Jockey Club reported record attendance and total handle on Friday’s 93rd Black-Eyed Susan Day, highlighted by Gary and Mary West’s Actress winning the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) and Stronach Stable’s Shaman Ghost winning the $300,000 Xpressbet Pimlico Special (G3).

Friday’s attendance was a record 50,339, topping the previous mark of 47,956 set last year.

Total handle on the 14-race program was a record $19.895 million, a 6-percent increase over last year’s previous record total handle of $18.661 million. With nearly another $750,000 bet on the Black-Eyed Susan-Preakness daily double, total handle was more than $20 million.

“It was a great day of world-class racing and extraordinary performances by our human and equine athletes,” said Sal Sinatra, President and General Manager of the Maryland Jockey Club. “We believe our total handle could have been larger if not for the afternoon rainstorm and some 20 scratches. The Ultimate Girls Day Out continues to grow and fans and horsemen continue to see the renewed energy in Maryland racing.

“We’re looking forward to another incredible day of racing Saturday with the 142nd Preakness Stakes (G1) as well as entertainment by Sam Hunt, Zedd, Good Charlotte, LOCASH and High Valley.”
