BALTIMORE,MD 05-14-10 – Preston Stable LLC’s Central City held on to score a narrow victory in the $70,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint Friday at Pimlico Race Course.
Jockey Julien Leparoux quickly sent the 4-year-old son of City Place to force the pace but just as quickly inherited the lead. The speedy duo held fast to the rail the rest of the way and lasted to win by a diminishing neck over Sacred Journey, who was ridden by Ramon Dominguez. Heros Reward and jockey Javier Castellano finished third.
The Ronny Werner-trained colt came into the McKay off a game third in the Grade 3 Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs, his first turf attempt. He completed the five-furlong distance in 56.18 seconds and paid $8.40.
 Jim McKay Turf Sprint Quotes
Ronny Werner (winning trainer, Central City) – “You can’t take much of a hold on him because of his throat. He’s pretty good, though. He’s pretty kind and relaxes up there. The rider just needs to hang on. We’ll keep him short. He’s got a throat on him. It’s the reason I run him short. It’s a shame. I’d give anything to have a good throat on him, because he could possibly be anything.”
Julien Leparoux (winning jockey, Central City) – “He broke nice and ran comfortably in second. I didn’t want to take too much of a hold. At the quarter pole he really kicked in and I was pretty sure I was going to hold off Ramon.”
