Paul Hornung soaks up atmosphere on backstrech
Published:May 17, 2013
Football legend Paul Hornung, who is among the owners of Titletown Five, was on the backstretch Friday morning.
Hornung, who won the Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame and is in the pro football Hall of Fame, was a running back and kicker for the powerful Green Bay Packers teams in the 1960s.
Concerning how running a horse in the Preakness might compare with other thrills in his sporting life, Hornung said: “It’s fantastic. I enjoy horse racing. I grew up with it in Louisville, Ky.
“I’ll get a horse in the Derby before I die.’’
Hornung said he has warm memories of Baltimore.
“My first date with my wife (Angela) was right here at the Preaknes,’’ he said. “She’s coming in tonight. We’ll going to celebrate.’’
Packers games against the Baltimore Colts were memorable, too.
“I had the best game I ever had here – five touchdowns – kicked their ass,’’ Hornung said. “We had a good rivalry with Baltimore.’’
Willie Davis, another former Packers player who is in the Hall of Fame, also is among Titletown Five’s owners, as is trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
